If you are currently struggling to conceive, it’s easy to feel like you’re facing more obstacles than options. You might be feeling confused, stuck, or paralysed by the sheer volume of information available. If we were sitting down together for a coffee, there are a few things I would want to tell you right now to help you find your way forward.
1. This Is Not Your Fault
The first and most important thing to know is that you are not doing anything wrong. Infertility is a medical hurdle; it is not a reflection of your worth or a result of your past actions. Many people blame themselves for not making decisions "quickly enough," but big life choices take time. You are already going through a hard time; please stop giving yourself a hard time for it.
2. You Don’t Need a Plan from A to Z
Our brains naturally crave a complete roadmap to feel safe. However, fertility journeys are often unpredictable with many variables. Trying to figure out the entire path at once can lead to paralysis.
Instead of trying to map out the next year, focus only on the one next step. Once you take that step, the path will begin to unfold.
3. More Research Isn’t Always the Answer
It sounds counterintuitive, but "over-researching" often leads to "analysis by paralysis". The internet is full of marketing dressed up as facts and conflicting opinions that can make you second-guess yourself.
You don’t necessarily need more information; you need the right information in the right order. Knowing which parts of the process are certain and which are unknown can help your brain relax and focus on what you can actually control.
4. You Are Allowed to Do Things Differently
You are not restricted to the "normal path" or the specific systems in your home country. Whether it’s seeking a second opinion or exploring advanced fertility testing and treatment abroad, you are allowed to explore every option.
Choosing a different path—such as treatment at an ethical clinic abroad—can often provide:
· Faster access to care.
· Advanced options that may not be available locally.
· Budget flexibility, allowing you to stretch your resources further.
5. Don’t Stay Stuck Forever
It is perfectly okay to feel stuck for a little while. But remember that your time, energy, and fertility matter. Identify one teeny, tiny, non-overwhelming step you can take today to regain your momentum.
You deserve to feel confident and supported in your decisions, ensuring that whatever the end result, you can look back with no regrets.
