Struggling to Conceive and You Don't Know What To Do Next

“We’re just going to wait and see what happens.”
It’s something I hear often from people who are struggling to conceive. It’s something I’ve said myself.
Sometimes, waiting is a considered decision. You understand your situation, have discussed the timing with your fertility specialist and feel comfortable giving yourself more time.
But sometimes, those words cover something harder to say: “I don’t know what else to do.”
If that sounds familiar, a useful starting point is understanding what remains unclear about your situation. That might be your test results, the reasons behind a treatment recommendation or whether another opinion would help. You don’t have to decide your entire fertility future before asking for support.
When waiting starts to feel like being stuck
There can be many reasons for putting off a fertility decision. Treatment may feel financially out of reach. You might be frightened of another disappointment, exhausted by conflicting advice or unsure whether you have any options left.
Even researching can become overwhelming. One clinic recommends something different from another. Someone online describes a test you’ve never heard of. Another evening disappears into searching, and you finish with more questions than you started with.
I know how consuming this can become, both from my own experience and from supporting people through fertility decisions.
Recognising that you feel stuck can help you identify the support you need. It doesn’t create an obligation to start treatment or make a big decision immediately.
Understanding the information you already have
Fertility testing can leave you with results but very little understanding of what they mean for you. Perhaps you’ve been told everything looks normal, yet you still haven’t conceived. Perhaps you have a diagnosis, but nobody has clearly explained how it relates to the treatment being suggested.
Unexplained infertility means that investigations have not identified a cause. It does not automatically mean something has been missed, or that more testing will provide an answer. The NHS information on infertility explains this and recommends discussing next steps with your doctor.
You should still feel able to ask for a clearer explanation of your results and whether any further investigation is appropriate for your circumstances.
The aim is to understand what is already known and what that means for your options. Having every available test is not necessarily helpful, and decisions about investigations belong with a qualified clinician.
You deserve to understand your treatment plan
Being advised to have IVF is a significant moment. It can bring relief that there is a possible way forward, alongside worries about cost, treatment and whether it will work. Understanding why it has been recommended matters. So does having the opportunity to discuss any appropriate alternatives.
This is especially relevant after an unsuccessful IVF cycle. Before committing to further treatment, you may need time with your clinic to understand what happened, what remains uncertain and the reasoning behind its recommendation.
There may not be a definite explanation for why a cycle did not result in a baby. A recommendation to repeat an approach does not automatically mean your clinic has overlooked something. But you should be able to understand the thinking behind it. Asking for that explanation is a reasonable part of being involved in your care.
A second opinion can help clarify your options when struggling to conceive
Seeking a fertility second opinion can feel uncomfortable, particularly when you like your clinic or have built a relationship with the team.
It doesn’t have to mean leaving.
Another specialist may agree with the current recommendation and help you feel more confident about it. They may offer a different perspective or discuss an option you have not previously considered.
Neither outcome guarantees success. The value is in having a clearer understanding of your situation before making another decision.
If you are considering a second opinion, it can help to recognise what still feels unresolved. You don’t need a perfectly organised medical history or all the right terminology to explain that you are unsure.
Does your current clinic still feel right for you?
Familiarity can be comforting during fertility treatment. Knowing the staff and what to expect can make a difficult experience feel more manageable.
Staying with your clinic may be the right choice. Equally, your needs or priorities may have changed since you first chose it.
For some people, this is when fertility treatment abroad becomes part of the conversation. For others, remaining in their home country feels more appropriate.
Going abroad is not automatically the answer to unsuccessful treatment or uncertainty. It is one possibility to explore in the context of your medical needs, finances, practical circumstances and preferences.
You can find out more without committing to a clinic, country or treatment.
Finding a manageable next step
When you want a baby, it is understandable to want a complete plan. Living with uncertainty is exhausting.
But trying to settle every future decision at once can make the immediate one harder.
You may need a clearer explanation from your clinic. You may want a specialist review. Or you may need independent support to make sense of the information you have collected and understand how the available options fit your life.
The key points to remember are:
Waiting can be a valid, informed choice.
You deserve clear explanations of your results and recommendations.
Seeking another opinion does not commit you to changing clinics.
Exploring your options does not commit you to treatment.
