If you’ve been told you can’t access fertility treatment because of your body size — you’re not alone. And more importantly, you’re not the problem.

Every year, countless people are excluded from NHS or private fertility services purely because of their Body Mass Index (BMI) — a flawed and outdated tool that continues to be used as a gatekeeping measure, despite growing criticism from both patients and professionals.

But here’s the truth: your BMI does not define your health, your worth, or your ability to become a parent.

🚫 The Brutal Reality: Weight-Based Discrimination in Fertility Care

BMI cutoffs are being used to deny treatment to hopeful parents — sometimes before they've even been offered basic testing. These restrictions can feel dehumanising, unjust, and deeply discouraging.

The heartbreak? You could be otherwise healthy. Your hormone levels, ovulation patterns, and overall wellbeing might all be within normal ranges — yet your body is labelled “unfit” for care, based solely on a number.

This isn’t just frustrating. It’s harmful.

📉 Why BMI Isn’t a Valid Measure of Health

The BMI scale was never designed to assess individual health. It doesn’t take into account muscle mass, bone density, age, genetics, or body composition — and yet it’s still used as a shortcut to assess who deserves fertility care.

This reliance on BMI overlooks the nuances of reproductive health and perpetuates stigma against people in larger bodies, making them feel like they have to shrink themselves to be worthy of support.

💔 The Emotional Impact of Weight Stigma

Being denied care because of your body is more than a medical issue — it’s a deeply personal blow.

People often report feeling ashamed, blamed, and dismissed by healthcare providers. The constant messaging that "you just need to lose weight" before you can be helped adds pressure and isolation at a time when compassion is most needed.

This kind of stigma can lead to delays in diagnosis, disordered eating, and avoidance of healthcare altogether — compounding the struggle to conceive.

💪 How to Advocate for Yourself

If you’re navigating fertility care in a weight-stigmatising system, here are some ways to take back your power:

  • Ask for evidence: If you’re told you must lose weight before accessing treatment, ask for the specific medical evidence that supports that recommendation.

  • Know your rights: You have the right to respectful, non-discriminatory healthcare. Don’t be afraid to challenge bias — or switch providers if needed.

  • Bring support: Take a partner, friend, or advocate to appointments who can help you feel grounded and speak up if needed.

  • Document everything: Keep a record of what’s said in consultations. If you’re denied care, ask for it in writing and seek a second opinion.

  • Look beyond borders: Many weight-inclusive fertility clinics exist abroad that do not impose BMI cutoffs. Exploring international treatment options can open doors that feel permanently shut in the UK.

🌍 Weight-Inclusive Fertility Treatment Does Exist

There are clinics — both in the UK and internationally — that will treat you with the respect and dignity you deserve, regardless of your size. These providers recognise that weight is only one small part of a complex fertility picture and that people of all body types deserve access to compassionate, evidence-based care.

✨ You Are Worthy — Right Now

You are not a “problem” to be fixed. You are not a number on a chart. You are not less deserving of becoming a parent.

Fertility struggles are hard enough without being told that your body disqualifies you from care. It’s time to challenge the systems that uphold these harmful beliefs — and to support every person’s right to build the family they dream of, without shame or discrimination.

💛 If you’ve ever been made to feel like your body is the barrier — know this: you are not alone, and you are not to blame. You are enough. Just as you are.
