Why Success Rates Don’t Tell You the Whole Story When Choosing IVF Clinics

Choosing a fertility clinic is one of the most significant decisions you'll ever make. Naturally, most people head straight for the "Success Rates" page. If you're investing your heart, soul, and savings into IVF, especially if you're looking at options abroad, you want the highest statistical chance of bringing a baby home.
But here is the uncomfortable truth: Success rates can be incredibly misleading.
The Problem with "Patient Selection"
Not all clinics are playing on the same field. Some clinics maintain high success rates by being very selective about who they treat. If a clinic primarily accepts younger patients with less complex fertility issues, their numbers will naturally look better than a clinic that specialises in "difficult" cases or older patients.
A clinic with a slightly lower success rate might actually be the more skilled option if they are successfully treating patients that other clinics have turned away.
Comparing Apples to Oranges
When looking at clinics across different countries, the data often doesn't line up. There is no global "standard" for reporting, which leads to confusion between:
Pregnancy Rates: A positive blood test or ultrasound.
Live Birth Rates: The number of babies actually born.
Cumulative Success: The chance of success over multiple cycles/transfers.
A clinic might boast a 70% "pregnancy rate," but if their "live birth rate" is significantly lower, that headline figure is more of a marketing tool than a clinical guarantee.
What Matters More Than the Numbers when choosing an IVF Clinic?
If you can’t rely solely on the stats, what should you look for? The goal isn't to find the clinic with the best numbers—it’s to find the clinic best suited to your individual circumstances.
Transparency: Do they explain their specific data for your age group and diagnosis?
Specialisation: Do they have expertise in your specific fertility challenges (e.g., endometriosis, male factor, or recurrent miscarriage)?
Communication: How do they handle your questions? Do you feel like a patient or a number?
Success is personal. Don't let a flashy percentage distract you from finding the specialised care you deserve.
