Recurrent Miscarriage: What to Do When You Still Don’t Have Answers

Experiencing one miscarriage can be devastating. When pregnancy loss happens repeatedly, the grief is often accompanied by another painful question: why does this keep happening?
You may have been told that it is simply bad luck, that your test results are normal or that you should keep trying. But after recurrent miscarriage, trying again without clearer answers can feel frightening and emotionally exhausting.
What is recurrent miscarriage?
Recurrent miscarriage, also called recurrent pregnancy loss, means experiencing more than one miscarriage.
Definitions and referral criteria vary between healthcare providers and countries. This can affect when investigations are offered and what tests are available.
Some people receive testing after two losses, while others are told they must experience three before they can access specialist support.
Whatever the number, every pregnancy loss matters. You should not feel that your grief is less valid because a miscarriage happened early.
Why does recurrent miscarriage happen?
There are several possible reasons for recurrent pregnancy loss, including:
· Chromosomal or genetic factors
· Structural differences within the uterus
· Blood-clotting conditions
· Hormonal or thyroid problems
· Age-related changes in egg quality
· Certain underlying health conditions
In many cases, however, no definite cause is found through standard testing.
That does not necessarily mean there is nothing more to explore. It may mean that the investigations carried out so far have been limited or that your situation needs to be reviewed by a more appropriate specialist.
What testing may be offered?
Testing after recurrent miscarriage will depend on your medical history and the service you are using.
It may include blood tests, genetic investigations, assessment of the uterus and a review of your general and reproductive health.
Some private and overseas clinics offer additional investigations or treatment approaches that are not routinely available through the NHS. However, more testing is not always better.
Certain areas of recurrent miscarriage treatment remain debated, and not every test or treatment is supported by strong evidence. This makes it especially important to understand why something is being recommended and whether it is relevant to your individual circumstances.
When “normal” results do not feel like an answer
Being told your results are normal can bring relief, but it can also leave you feeling confused.
You may still not understand why the losses happened or what should change before another pregnancy.
A useful specialist review should help you understand:
· What has already been tested
· What those results actually mean
· Whether anything important has been missed
· Whether further investigation is appropriate
· What your realistic treatment options are
You deserve more than a general instruction to keep trying without understanding the reasoning behind it.
The emotional impact of pregnancy after loss
A new pregnancy does not automatically remove the trauma of previous miscarriages.
Pregnancy after loss can involve intense anxiety, particularly around scans, bleeding, medical appointments and pregnancy milestones.
Even after bringing home a baby, miscarriage can continue to affect your emotional wellbeing. Medical environments, periods or conversations about pregnancy may bring back difficult memories.
There is no correct timetable for recovering from pregnancy loss. Support may come from counselling, specialist charities, peer groups or people who have experienced something similar.
Considering private treatment or fertility treatment abroad
After recurrent miscarriage, you may begin researching private specialists or clinics overseas.
Going abroad can provide access to a wider choice of clinics, specialists and testing options. But it can also expose you to confusing information, expensive packages and treatments promoted as the answer for everyone.
The right clinic is not simply the one offering the most tests.
It should be a clinic with appropriate experience in your particular history, clear reasons for its recommendations and a treatment plan tailored to you.
Why independent guidance matters
When you have experienced repeated loss, it is understandable to feel desperate for answers. That vulnerability can make it difficult to judge competing medical opinions or recognise when a clinic is overselling a treatment.
At Your IVF Abroad, I help people review their fertility journey, understand what may still need exploring and identify overseas clinics that are suited to their individual circumstances.
I do not receive commission from fertility clinics. My guidance is independent, so the focus remains on what is right for you rather than which clinic benefits commercially.
If recurrent miscarriage has left you feeling stuck, dismissed or unsure where to turn next, you do not have to navigate every clinic and treatment option alone.
