BMI and IVF: Why One Clinic’s ‘No’ Doesn’t Mean the Door Is Closed

If you have been told that your BMI is too high for IVF treatment, it can feel devastating.

For many people, it does not land as a neutral medical policy. It lands as rejection. It can feel like yet another door closing after months or years of trying to build your family. And when you are already emotionally exhausted, being told ‘no’ because of a number on a chart feels deeply personal.  I know, because I’ve been there. But one clinic’s ‘no’ does not always mean the end of the road and I am living proof of that.

BMI policies vary widely between clinics and countries. Some fertility clinics have strict cut-off points. Others take a more individual view, looking at your overall health, medical history, treatment plan and circumstances. This is especially true when you start looking at IVF abroad, where clinic policies can differ significantly from what you may have been told in the UK.

That does not mean BMI is irrelevant. Clinics may consider BMI because it can affect treatment planning, anaesthetic risk, medication response, egg collection, pregnancy risk and overall safety. A reputable clinic should always take your health seriously. But BMI is only one part of the picture. It does not tell the whole story of your body, your fertility, your resilience, your medical history or your chances of becoming a parent.

The problem is that many people are left trying to work all of this out alone.

You might spend hours searching clinic websites, only to find vague information. You might email several clinics and receive different answers. You might be told one thing by one provider and something completely different by another. Some clinics may not make their BMI policy clear until you are already emotionally invested in them. Others may give you a flat refusal without helping you understand what your realistic options are.

That is where the process can become incredibly overwhelming.

If you are considering IVF abroad and BMI has become part of the conversation, the key is not to panic or assume there are no options. The key is to get clarity.

You need to know which clinics are likely to consider your case, what their criteria actually are, whether there is flexibility, and whether the clinic is safe, reputable and appropriate for your needs. You also need to understand whether treatment abroad would genuinely be a good fit for you, rather than choosing the first clinic that says yes.

Because “yes” is not enough on its own.

The right clinic should be transparent, medically responsible and clear about what they can offer. They should explain any risks properly. They should not make unrealistic promises. They should communicate well, answer your questions and help you feel informed rather than rushed.

It is also worth remembering that IVF abroad is not just about finding a clinic with different rules. It is about finding the right clinical, emotional and practical support for your situation. That might include donor eggs, donor sperm, embryo donation, solo parenthood, same-sex family building, previous failed cycles, miscarriage history, age-related fertility concerns, or complex medical considerations.

Every person arrives at IVF abroad with a different story.

For some, BMI becomes a barrier at home. For others, it is one more stressful factor in an already complicated fertility journey. Either way, you deserve clear information, not shame. You deserve options, not assumptions. And you deserve support from someone who understands how confusing this process can feel.

I can help you explore your options safely and sensibly and help you understand which clinics may be suitable, what questions to ask, what costs to expect, and how to avoid wasting time, money and emotional energy on clinics that are not the right fit.

A BMI-related refusal can feel like the end of the road, but often, it is not the end.

It may simply mean you need better information, the right guidance, and a clearer route forward.
